Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre becomes first Canadian Centre of Excellence in Focused Ultrasound

November 22, 2016

Last week, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre was designated a Centre of Excellence in focused ultrasound (FUS). Read the official Sunnybrook press release here.

Pioneering experiments have been performed at Sunnybrook since the early 1990s, and this research has led to many important accomplishments in the development of FUS technology. Led by Weston Brain Institute grantee Dr. Kullervo Hynynen, Sunnybrook is the first centre in Canada to receive this honour.

In 2013 Dr. Hynynen, with his colleague and fellow Institute grantee Dr. Isabelle Aubert, received  funding from our Transformational Research program to develop an affordable system for disrupting the blood-brain-barrier (BBB) and influencing the treatment of neurodegenerative disease. Dr. Aubert, in collaboration with Dr. Hynynen, was awarded funding under the same program to further develop an MRI-guided approach to focused ultrasound therapies.

In 2015, collaborating scientists at Sunnybrook announced that they had used FUS technology to open the BBB: a first in the world.
