Dr. Joseph Patterson
Dr. Patterson earned a Bachelor’s degree in Biology with an emphasis in Microscopy from Central Michigan University, a Master’s degree in Biology from Central Michigan University, and a PhD in Genetics from Michigan State University. His dissertation focused on the transcriptional regulation of the Park2 gene in nigrostriatal and tuberoinfundibular dopamine neurons in response to the neurotoxicant MPTP. He is currently conducting his post-doctoral research in the lab of Dr. Caryl Sortwell in the Department of Translational Science and Molecular Medicine on the College of Human Medicine Campus in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Dr. Patterson will be working on identifying a protocol for the delivery of α-synuclein preformed fibrils to elicit optimal nigrostriatal degeneration in the rat model. Once optimized, gene expression profiles through the progression of neurodegeneration can be obtained and potential therapeutic targets identified.
