Dr. Viona J.M. Wijnen

Dr. Viona J.M. Wijnen focused most of her research at how the brain interacts with the body to come to proper functioning. In this context, dr. Wijnen used a variety of clinical tools and technologies in order to investigate the reactivity of the brain to the environment. Her Master research focused on emotional processing, personality, and physiological reactivity in the development of essential hypertension. Her PhD concerned the evaluation of recovery to consciousness, in young patients with the most severe acquired brain injury. Longitudinal measures of neurophysiological and behavioural reactions during these patients’ intensive neurorehabilitation, have lead to the findings of possible neuroplasticity of the brain, as well as prognostic value of electrophysiological brain responses in predicting long-term outcome. A wish of Dr. Wijnen is to investigate the effects of an innovative bedside electrophysiological tool in the care of patients with neurodegenerative brain disease during the current fellowship.
