Dr. Miguel Moutinho

Dr. Miguel Moutinho received his PhD in Pharmacy (Cellular and Molecular Biology) from the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Lisbon, under the supervision of Dr. Elsa Rodrigues and Dr. Cecília Rodrigues. His thesis was focused on the identification and characterization of signaling pathways modulated by the neuronal cholesterol-metabolizing enzyme CYP46A1. During his PhD he also participated in other research projects mainly related to brain cholesterol homeostasis. After his dissertation, he began his posdoctoral studies at the Alzheimer’s disease laboratory of Dr. Gary Landreth. He is particularly interested in studying what are the underlying mechanisms that orchestrate brain function, and how they are affected in pathological contexts and ageing. Brain metabolism and bioenergetics, lipid homeostasis, synaptic function, nuclear receptors and glia-neuron interaction are areas that he is particularly keen on.
