Dr. Beibei Zhao

Postdoctoral Fellow, Brain Research Centre, University of British Columbia

Beibei Zhao has a broad background in cell biology and neuroscience, with specific training in biochemistry, immunocytochemistry, and immunohistochemistry. As a postdoctoral fellow at the Centre for Research in Neurodegenerative Diseases in Toronto, she was devoted to the identification of translational changes specifically occurring in the spinal cord motor neurons using both mouse models for motor neuron disease and post-mortem spinal cords from ALS patients. Her compassion about the individuals living with this devastating disease and earnestness to develop an effective therapeutic approach led her to continue her ALS research in the Cashman lab at the Brain Research Centre of UBC. Dr. Cashman has over 20 years of experience in understanding the pathological mechanisms causing several neurodegenerative diseases, such as prion disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and ALS. He is also one of the leading experts on the development of immunotherapeutic strategies for protein misfolding propagation diseases. Dr. Zhao is expecting to utilize her academic strength and the powerful resources and collaborations available at the Cashman lab to develop a safe and efficacious immunotherapeutic approach against ALS.
